The Associated Press noted Federer was the only candidate in the player category who received enough support for induction. The International Tennis Hall of Fame doesn't publicly disclose voting results.

"I've always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me," Federer said (h/t Associated Press). "To be recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply humbling."

Federer retired from competition in September 2022 after an appearance at the Laver Cup when he and Rafael Nadal lost a doubles match against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

Between singles and doubles competition, Federer played in 1,750 ATP matches over the course of his 24-year career that began in 1998. His 1,251 career victories in singles matches and 103 singles titles ranks second all-time, behind Jimmy Connors (1,274 match wins, 109 tournament titles).

Federer became the first men's player to win 20 career grand slam singles titles when he defeated Marin Čilić in the finals at the 2018 Australian Open. His eight Wimbledon championships are the most by a men's player in the Open Era.

King Roger also holds the record for most consecutive weeks spent at No. 1 in the ATP rankings (237) between February 2004 to August 2008.

Joining Federer in the International Tennis Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2026 is Mary Carillo for her contributions to the sport as a broadcaster and journalist.

The induction ceremony will be held next August in Newport, Rhode Island.
