Phillies' World Series Hopes Hinge on Trading Prospect Andrew Painter Amid MLB Rumors

Erik BeastonNov 17, 2025

The Philadelphia Phillies suffered another crushing playoff exit in 2025 and, while the team will look to the offseason to assemble the pieces needed to make another run at the World Series next year, the solution to acquiring the necessary players to make their dreams of a Commissioner's Trophy a reality rests in their Minor League system.

Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported that the Phillies are unlikely to include top prospect Andrew Painter in any package, signaling to potential trade partners that they would rather deal from their Major League roster.

Even with the potential for players such as Byron Buxton, Ketel Marte, Jo Adell, and Taylor Ward being available this offseason.

While some may applaud the organization for hanging onto Painter and looking to the future when it comes to its stud righty, it does not necessarily reflect the team's efforts elsewhere.

The Phillies are a team built for the here and now. It is why they gave Trea Turner 11 years and $300 million in 2022. It is why they will make a monster offer to try and keep Kyle Schwarber delivering home runs in Citizen's Bank Park for the rest of his career.

It is why they make deadline deals for players like Harrison Bader, as they did this past season.

The Phillies are looking to win and to do it now, and if that means going out and acquiring a player like Buxton, who hit .265 with 35 home runs and 83 RBI a season ago and is at a position of great need for them, they have to explore that option.

Or Marte, who hit .283, with 28 home runs and 72 RBI.MLB

Even if it means giving up a right-handed pitcher who may or may not have great Major League stuff. What is for certain is that Painter, in his first appearance in AAA ball this past season with Lehigh Valley, saw his ERA balloon to .540.

Ditto for any of the other potential trade targets mentioned.

Gelb did suggest that Jake Meyers from Houston, who is a right-handed hitter and is a strong defender in the outfield, could be a potential low-priced target for the team, but if the opportunity presents itself to trade for him or an explosive offensive weapons like Buxton or Marte, the Phillies owe it to their own World Series hopes and the fans' support of them to get that deal done.

Whether it costs them Painter or not.
