MLB Trade Rumors: Latest on Mitch Moreland, Dan Haren and More

Brian MaziqueJul 23, 2015

Texas Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland is a wanted man, but, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, there's no real push to move him.

The 29-year-old is having a good season. He's hitting .287 with 16 home runs and 49 RBI. He returned to the Rangers lineup on Wednesday after being rested since July 18. He had some elbow issues earlier in the season that may have brought on the rest.

Productive left-handed bats like Moreland are valuable, so it's no wonder teams are pursuing him.

He's also a free agent eligible for arbitration at the end of the season. He's making just $2.95 million this season, per Spotrac, which makes him an ultra-affordable rental. If Texas deems itself out of the playoff race, moving Moreland for a pitcher would be wise.

With him and Prince Fielder on the roster, the team might be a bit too left-handed in the first base/designated hitter role. The Rangers could benefit more down the road by adding an arm.

Speaking of adding an arm, Rosenthal tweeted the Rangers are "listening" when it comes to offers on Yovani Gallardo while still inquiring about the Philadelphia Phillies' Cole Hamels. Gallardo is 7-9 this season, but he has been better than his record would indicate.

His ERA is just 2.91, and his WHIP is 1.27. Just about any contending team could find a spot for him in its rotation.

Gallardo is even more attractive to potential trade suitors because his contract expires at the end of this season. A team that acquires him only has to pay the remainder of his $14 million salary for the 2015 campaign. If the Rangers go into sell mode, then why would they be interested in a player like Hamels who is viewed as a key piece for a playoff run?

Hamels is under contract until 2020. While he could help a team down the line, his $22.50 million annual salary from 2016-2018 and club option for $20 million in 2019 are decent investments for a 31-year-old hurler of Hamels' caliber. He could be a best-of-both-worlds kind of guy.

As usual, there's a ton of discussion going on around pitchers all over the majors. The Toronto Blue Jays are in second place in the American League East and firmly in the race for a playoff spot. The Jays offense is arguably the best in baseball, but the brain trust is seemingly targeting pitching.

Per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Jays have no interest in Miami Marlins starter Mat Latos but would potentially be interested in another of the Fish's starting pitchers:

Haren is 34, and he's having a solid season. He leads the Marlins in wins with seven and strikeouts with 81. The Jays could plug him in as a third or fourth starter. While it wouldn't be the equivalent of landing a guy such as the Cincinnati Reds' Johnny Cueto or Hamels, it would still strengthen the team's biggest weakness.
