Fans were impressed with the performance.

Belichick's squad didn't start strong, trailing 10-6 at halftime. The Tar Heels eventually gained some separation by outscoring Syracuse 14-0 in the third quarter before stepping up defensively to preserve the win.

North Carolina won due to its strong defensive performance, holding the Orange to a mere 147 total yards. This included 108 rush yards for Syracuse, although it averaged just 3.4 yards per carry.

Joseph Filardi, who was initially recruited to play lacrosse, started at quarterback for the Orange. Filardi finished 4-of-18 for 39 yards.

For North Carolina, Gio Lopez put together an efficient performance under center. Lopez completed 15 of his 19 pass attempts for 216 yards and two touchdowns without getting picked off.

The Tar Heels also found success on the ground, with three different players rushing for over 30 yards. They were led by Demon June, who picked up 101 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

June also caught two passes for a team-high 81 yards, finding the end zone again as a receiver.

North Carolina improved to 3-5 on the season, while Syracuse fell to 3-6.
