Missouri vs. Vanderbilt Preview and Prediction
Diego Pavia has been a revelation under center for the home team. The 24 year-old quarterback has thrown for 1,569 yards and 15 touchdowns to just four interceptions, while adding 438 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns.
He is just one of five FBS QBs to achieve those numbers this season, a testament to his level of play and how important he has been to his school's success.
A week ago, the the senior led Vanderbilt to an upset win over LSU and will look to keep his team's dreams of a playoff berth alive against a Missouri team riding its own wave of momentum, thanks to one of the best run games in the country.
The Tigers average the seventh-most rushing yards per game at 245. Unlike other squads that have faced Vanderbilt this season, Missouri has a strong enough defense to test the Commodores' explosive offense, not unlike the Alabama Crimson Tide, who limited an offense averaging 457.7 yards per game to 333.
Running the ball, setting the pace and controlling time of possession, and holding that monster offense in check is a recipe for victory, but it remains to be seen if the Tigers can succeed at the level of a consistent championship contender like 'Bama.
A loss and Vanderbilt essentially takes itself out of the playoff conversation, at least for the time being. Considering how great Pavia has been, and how he has managed to limit the turnovers while guiding his team to signature wins, including last week against another Tigers team, one would be hard pressed to pick against the home team.
Especially since Missouri has not been tested at the level the Commodores have.
As long as Vanderbilt can protect the ball and not make the type of mistakes that doom teams coming off of big victories, there is no reason to believe they will not extend their record to 6-1, if for no other reason than big time players excel in big time games and Pavia is a legitimate Heisman candidate.
Prediction: Vanderbilt 30, Missouri 28
