NBA Agent Uses 'The Torture Chamber' to Describe Contract Extension Deadline Window
One NBA agent had a unique way to describe the days leading up to Monday's deadline to finalize new deals for many eligible players.
The agent called this part of extension negotiations "the torture chamber," according to ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst.
Teams have up until 6 p.m. ET to sign any players on rookie scale extensions, or extension-eligible veterans not in a contract year, before the start of the 2025-26 season (h/t Hoops Rumors' Luke Adams).
Players eligible to sign rookie scale extensions who remain unsigned as of Friday include the Denver Nuggets' Christian Braun, Detroit Pistons' Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey, Houston Rockets' Tari Eason, Utah Jazz's Walker Kessler, Indiana Pacers' Bennedict Mathurin and Phoenix Suns' Mark Williams.
If these players remained unsigned by Monday's deadline, they will be eligible for restricted free agency next summer.
The Miami Heat's Tyler Herro meanwhile headlines the veteran players who will run out of time to sign an extension after Monday's deadline.
Veterans on expiring contracts, like the Rockets' Kevin Durant, will remain able to sign extensions throughout the season.
Those with player options for 2026-27, such as the Atlanta Hawks' Trae Young, will also remain eligible as long as the extension is declined alongside the new deal (h/t Adams).
The 2025-26 NBA season begins next Tuesday with an Opening Night lineup featuring the Rockets at the Oklahoma City Thunder followed by the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers.
By the time the Rockets tip off their season opener against the Thunder, members of the 2022 draft class will either be newly-extended signees or pending RFAs.
