Matt Rhule Hypes Nebraska as a 'Destination Job' on Video Amid Penn State Rumors
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has been rumored to be a top candidate for the Penn State opening following the firing of James Franklin, but it sounds like he doesn't plan on going anywhere.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rhule said he's focused on leading the Cornhuskers, calling his current position "a destination job."
In his third year at the helm, Rhule has led Nebraska to a 5-1 start and the No. 25 ranking in the AP Poll. While he's made no indications that he's looking to leave anytime soon, he was linked to Penn State's opening immediately because of his previous ties to the program, as he played linebacker as a walk-on for the Nittany Lions from 1994 to 1997.
Still, Rhule spoke strongly about his affinity for the Cornhuskers and the Lincoln community.
"This is not a jumping off job," Rhule said. "This is a destination job. This is one of the greatest places in the world."
Rhule also touted Nebraska's future, as the Cornhuskers are the youngest team in the Big Ten and could emerge as a national title contender with the right development.
"Think about how good we'll be next year," Rhule said. "I'm not thinking about next year, but where we are right now, we're learning, learning, learning. Think about where we're gonna go with Dylan (Raiola) and all these guys."
Rhule, who added, "I refuse to be distracted" as he prepares Nebraska to face Minnesota on Saturday, expressed optimism about Penn State's coaching prospects.
"When it's your alma mater, you have to show it love and respect," he said. "I love Pat Kraft. They'll find the right coach for them, whoever that is."
