Preview and Prediction
Oregon vs. Indiana is a battle of two unbeaten teams in the Big Ten, a showdown of elite squads, both of whom are likely to be among those competing for a national title by the end of the season.
Both teams are in the top 10 in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense, and total defense, per ESPN.
The Ducks and Hoosiers both came from out of nowhere last season to be legitimate title contenders in a season where little was expected from either. Now, head coaches Dan Lanning and Curt Cignetti have their programs in position to not only battle for a conference title, but to be threats in the postseason tournament.
For two teams so evenly matched, the difference may prove to be the play of the quarterbacks. In his first season with the Hoosiers, Fernando Mendoza has completed 73 percent of his passes for 1,208 yards, 16 TDs, and a lone interception. The Ducks' Dante Moore has completed 74.8 percent, tallied 1,210 yards, and thrown for 14 touchdowns to one interception.
Both have been outstanding for their teams but one has been on a stage of this magnitude, in a game of this importance, and excelled.
Against Penn State two weeks ago, Moore was nearly perfect. He compiled a passer rating of 153.2 while hurling three touchdowns. He seized the moment, performed up to it, and entered the Heisman conversation.
The same opportunity awaits Mendoza, who can enter that national debate with another stellar performance against an Oregon defense that has been excellent through the first give games of the season.
Moore and Oregon's experience on this stage will be the difference and, despite a strong showing from Mendoza and Indiana, the Ducks will earn the win and continue their march toward the top of the college football world, overcoming an elite defense to do so.
