Deion Sanders Says He'll Coach Colorado vs. Iowa State After Surgery for Blood Clots

Joseph ZuckerOct 9, 2025

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders intends to be on the sideline for Saturday's game against No. 22 Iowa State.

During his weekly coaches show, Sanders said at the 22:05 mark he's "a little sore" after undergoing a procedure to address clotting in his leg. Still, he's "good" to coach the Buffs this weekend.

Midway through Colorado's 35-21 loss to TCU, the Hall of Fame cornerback removed his left shoe on the sideline. Asked about it after the game, he divulged that his circulatory issues may have returned.

"I think I got more blood clots. Cat's out of the bag, alright," he told reporters. "I think I got more blood clots. Man, it doesn't make sense. I'm hurting like crazy. I have a doctor's appointment on Monday. So that's what's going on. I'm not getting blood to my leg. That's why my leg is throbbing. I'm sorry to get that out, but thank you for noticing."

Sanders followed up Tuesday to say he was scheduled for a procedure later in the day and was optimistic he'd be back at the football facilities by Wednesday.

The 58-year-old reiterated that his clotting is hereditary within his family. Two toes from his left foot have been removed because of poor circulation, and doctors once contemplated removing his foot altogether.

Sanders also announced in July he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and already declared cancer-free. The situation had forced him to scale back his day-to-day duties at Colorado.

The Buffs are looking for their first Big 12 win in Week 7 after dropping their first three contests. With four defeats overall, they're also inching closer toward missing out on a bowl game.
