Michael Jordan's 'Closed Eyes Free Throw' Shoes Expected to Sell for Up to $600K

Joseph ZuckerSep 18, 2025

Sotheby's is putting a new meaning behind blind bidding as it auctions off a pair of game-used sneakers from NBA legend Michael Jordan.

The auction house listed the Air Jordan VII shoes Jordan wore in a March 1992 win over the New York Knicks. Toward the end of the game, MJ closed his eyes while attempting a free throw.

It wasn't the first time Jordan taunted an opposing team by shooting blind from the charity stripe.

As Chicago was sealing a victory over the Denver Nuggets in November 1991, the Hall of Famer got the attention of famed shot-blocker Dikembe Mutombo and said, "This one's for you, baby," before sinking a free throw with his eyes closed.

Jordan played 40 minutes and dropped a game-high 36 points against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. It was another example of how the five-time MVP had New York's number during this period.

The Bulls swept the Knicks in the first round of the 1991 NBA playoffs as they kicked off their first three-peat. The beat the Knicks in seven games in the second round in 1992 before besting them again in the Eastern Conference Finals in 1993.

Fans in the Big Apple were left to wonder what could've been from the Pat Riley and Patrick Ewing era.

Sotheby's estimated the final price for MJ's game-used Air Jordans could range from $400,000 to $600,000.

It's safe to assume Riley or Ewing won't be placing a bid.
