Quentin Grimes, 76ers Reportedly Haven't Made 'Tangible' Progress amid Contract Rumors

Zach BacharSep 12, 2025

The Philadelphia 76ers and restricted free agent Quentin Grimes still appear to be at an impasse in contract negotiations.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, there has been "no tangible movement" in discussions surrounding a new deal between both sides.

Fischer noted that talks have stalled despite Grimes recently posting a photo of himself in 76ers gear on his Instagram story.

The 25-year-old arrived in Philadelphia during the middle of the 2024-25 season following a Feb. 4 trade from the Dallas Mavericks.

Grimes excelled with the change of scenery, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from three-point territory with the 76ers.

It's worth noting that he received extended minutes in Philadelphia, partially due to injuries to multiple key guards, including Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain.

Philadelphia's reluctance to meet Grimes' asking price could stem from the uncertainty surrounding his impact in a backcourt that's expected to be much more crowded next season. Maxey and McCain will be returning while VJ Edgecombe, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, is also expected to step into an immediate rotation role.

Grimes alternated between a starter and a reserve option throughout his first three years in the NBA prior to his 2024-25 campaign, averaging 8.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game on 42.8/37.1/77.2 shooting splits in 168 appearances over that span.

If he can't find common ground with the 76ers, he could follow the example set by Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas. After Thomas and the Nets were unable to reach a new deal in restricted free agency, he signed the one-year qualifying offer to stay with the team during the 2025-26 season on Sept. 4.

The 76ers tendered an $8.7 million qualifying offer to Grimes in June, making him a restricted free agent.

Both sides will attempt to reach an agreement before Philadelphia's training camp opens on Sept. 24.
