Staub entered Saturday's action as a backup before he was inserted under center just before the end of the first half of Colorado's matchup with Delaware, immediately leading the team on a 75-yard touchdown drive.

Starter Kaidon Salter and second-string quarterback Julian Lewis both played in the first half, combining to finish 14-of-19 for 88 yards through the opening two quarters.

While the Buaffloes held a 17-7 edge at halftime, head coach Deion Sanders chose to go with Staub in the third quarter.

Salter, Lewis and Staub were all part of Colorado's battle for the starting quarterback job heading into the season. While Salter ultimately earned the Week 1 start, Staub made a strong impression on the Buffaloes' coaching staff during the offseason.

"Don't underestimate Staub and what he brings to the table and what he brings to the room," Deion said on Aug. 8, via SI.com's Jack Carlough. "He's been in that room for the last couple of years, so he's seen some things that has had consistency in what we want to desire. What he means to that room is phenomenal, just being that older guy, that veteran that understands how we want things with these two new guys."

Staub served as Shedeur's backup in both 2023 and 2024, getting a close look at several watch celebrations during his impressive collegiate career that included a No. 8 finish in Heisman Trophy voting last season.

Shedeur has brought the celebration to the NFL level, utilizing it during preseason action with Cleveland.

While the 23-year-old prepares to enter his first season in the NFL, he's still keeping track of his former teammate's success.
