Tommy Castellanos Bolsters Early Heisman Case, Shines with 3 TDs for FSU in Week 2
After a marquee win over Alabama in Week 1 that put him on the Heisman radar, Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos had another stellar outing on Saturday against East Texas A&M.
Castellanos was removed late in the second quarter because the game was so one-sided. He finished 7-of-10 for 230 yards and three touchdowns against the Lions.
Florida State scored touchdowns on each of its first seven first-half possessions.
Castellanos is now averaging 15.9 yards per attempt. Each of his three touchdown passes on Saturday were from at least 42 yards out, with two of them going to Duce Robinson.
A huge stat line against an FCS opponent isn't necessarily going to rattle any Heisman cages, but the senior star has been a big-play machine for an offense that has scored points on 11 of his 16 drives (10 touchdowns) through two games.
After two seasons at Boston College, Castellanos entered the portal as a largely-unheralded transfer recruit. He was rated as a 3-star prospect and No. 23 overall quarterback in the transfer portal, per 247Sports.
Last season was the first time Castellanos looked like a quality starter in college. He threw for 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns in eight games before leaving Boston College in mid-November after Grayson James was named the Eagles' starter.
It's still very early in the season and the schedule will start to get more difficult soon, but the Seminoles may have found a quarterback who can help them move into the ranks of the elite programs by the end of this season.
Next up for Castellanos and Florida State will be a home game with Kent State on Sept. 20.
