Shedeur Sanders Backs Deion, Colorado to Respond to Loss, 'They Have a Great Coach'

Adam WellsAug 30, 2025

There's not a lot of panic coming out of Colorado following a 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech in Friday's season opener.

In a post on X after the game, former Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders noted they will "figure things out" because "they have a great head coach."

Head coach Deion Sanders echoed his son's sentiments during his postgame press conference. He told reporters "we're definitely going to be fine" because they did enough to win this game, but couldn't take advantage of a few situations that seemed to be in their favor.

"We could have won that game. It's not like we got our butts kicked. They ran the heck out of the ball, they did that, but we had opportunities," said Sanders.

The first quarter, in particular, saw Colorado fail when Georgia Tech was tripping all over itself. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions.

Colorado could only turn one of those takeaways into points on Kaidon Salter's eight-yard touchdown pass to Dekalon Taylor on the team's opening possession.

Sanders was also not happy to see his team allow 320 rushing yards on 47 carries. The inability to stop the run came back to bite Colorado in the end when Haynes King broke loose for a 45-yard score with 1:07 remaining to put Georgia Tech ahead 27-20.

"Defensively, no, there's no way you can say you're physical when you got your butt kicked like that," Sanders said. "But offensively, you probably were sitting out there saying, 'Dang, they should keep running the ball' because you saw the physicality we've been talking about."

Colorado's last-ditch attempt to potentially tie the game came up short when Salter's Hail Mary as time expired fell incomplete.

This was always going to be something of a rebuilding year in Boulder. Colorado is integrating a new quarterback after Shedeur Sanders and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

Salter, who is replacing Shedeur after transferring from Liberty, threw for 159 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 43 yards and a score.

Friday's loss marks Coach Prime's first season-opening defeat as Colorado's head coach. The Buffaloes will look to rebound on Sept. 6 when they host Delaware at Folsom Field.
