NFL Training Camps 2015: Schedules and Top Storylines to Watch

Michelle BrutonJul 17, 2015

In just a couple of weeks, NFL teams will report to their practice facilities for 2015 training camps, making the arrival of the NFL season feel that much closer.

The Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints will get things going earliest, on July 22, while fans of the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles will have to wait until August for their teams to kick things off.

Pads usually go on either at or shortly after the first practice available to the public, so if you happen to live near your team's training facility—or any team's training facility—don't miss the chance to check out veterans and rookies practicing in pads for the first time.

Top Storylines to Watch

Some NFL teams manage to find themselves in the news far more often than others, but the truth is that every single team has an interesting storyline to follow as we approach the start of training camp.

However, these three situations are a little juicier than others. Keep an eye on these storylines as we get closer to camp, and make sure to check in on the team during practice to see how everything shakes out.

Will Titans Rookie Quarterback Marcus Mariota Miss Part of Training Camp?

Rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota is, as of Friday, the only 2015 first-round draft pick who has yet to sign a contract.

The holdup? The Titans want to have offset language in Mariota's contract, which "allows teams to recapture guaranteed money if the player is released and signs with another team," per Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com.

It's easy to see why Mariota—or more accurately, Mariota's agents, Bruce and Ryan Tollner—doesn't want to sign a contract containing offset language. With the omission of that language, Mariota could be paid by another team in addition to the Titans if he didn't finish out his deal.

But according to Titans interim CEO and president Steve Underwood, the team won't be backing down.

ESPN's Ed Werder shared his opinion on Twitter that it might be the wrong stance for the team to take:

"We've always had offset language in our player contracts. It's nothing new," Underwood said this week, per Kuharsky. "I think it is important where a high first-round draft pick is concerned, because it's the precedent. Everything that we do is precedential for the next round of contracts."

One side has to budge before the start of Titans training camp on July 30, or Mariota won't be showing up. And from the looks of it, Tennessee will not be the party that backs down.

This training camp will be enormously important for Mariota as he attempts to transition from Oregon's spread offense to a pro-style system. And with the Titans adapting their offense to fit Mariota's skill set, as NFL.com's Kevin Patra reported back in May, they'll need all of the time they can get to implement it.

Can Miami Dolphins Capitalize on Their Flashy Offseason Additions?

The Miami Dolphins definitely won the offseason. The team added plenty of weapons in free agency for quarterback Ryan Tannehill in wide receivers Greg Jennings and Kenny Stills and tight end Jordan Cameron.

Miami then selected pass-catcher DeVante Parker in Round 1 of the draft, giving Tannehill one of the more well-stocked arsenals in the league. The question, of course, is how all of those individual weapons will work collectively in Miami's scheme.

There's also the issue of Tannehill allegedly being difficult to work with both in the locker room and on the field. According to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the receivers who didn't like Tannehill found they were not long for Miami. Kelly said on WQAM’s Joe Rose Show, (via CBS Miami's Josh Baumgard):

"

His receivers did not like him last year and they didn’t hide it. All the receivers that didn’t like him have been dumped except for Rishard Matthews. We’re getting to the point now where if you don’t like Ryan Tannehill you’ve got to go. And I understand that but there are players who are saying 'we’re hitching our wagon to the wrong person.'

"

But the Dolphins' biggest offseason signing was undoubtedly defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The former Detroit Lion had 8.5 sacks in 2014, and his ability to rush the passer will be crucial when the Dolphins meet the New England Patriots twice this year.

On paper, everything is coming up roses for the Dolphins. But can these factors all come together to result in the Dolphins' first winning season since 2008? The team's development with its new weapons will be a compelling storyline through training camp.

Can Nick Foles, Improved O-Line Turn the St. Louis Rams Around?

Have the St. Louis Rams really been on the cusp of a winning record for years, hindered only by injury-prone former quarterback Sam Bradford?

It seems unlikely, especially given the fact that Bradford was rarely surrounded by consistent and proven weapons, and had nearly as many offensive coordinators (three) as number of seasons played in St. Louis (five).

However, the arrival of Nick Foles will help settle that question once and for all.

Foles will certainly be helped by the attention the Rams have spent on the offensive line this offseason. In an almost comical turn of events given the its excess, the Rams selected offensive linemen Rob Havenstein, Jamon Brown, Andrew Donnal and Cody Wichmann in the 2015 NFL draft, and then added tackle Isaiah Battle in the supplemental draft.

The Rams could have three open starting roles on the offensive line heading into training camp: right tackle, right guard and center. Per Myles Simmons of the team's official website, Greg Robinson and Rodger Saffold are the presumed starters at left tackle and left guard, respectively, but both are recovering from offseason surgery.

Though the line is in flux now, the Rams have an arsenal of options with which to stock it, and they will be left with plenty of depth behind the starting five. It should be enough to establish the power run game behind rookie Todd Gurley and keep Foles upright long enough to progress through his reads.

Under former iterations of the line, Bradford was near the top of the league in sacks, taking 36 in 2011 and 35 in 2012.

Those who have felt Bradford was holding the Rams back over the last five seasons will be especially interested in following Foles through training camp, along with his bolstered offensive line, to see if he can turn things around for St. Louis.
