K-State QB Avery Johnson's Dad Mark, Brother Anthony Apologize for Viral Fight Video
Mark and Anthony Johnson—the father and brother, respectively, of Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson—apologized in a joint statement after a video of them fighting went viral following the Wildcats' 24-21 loss against Iowa State in Dublin.
"We sincerely apologize for our actions following yesterday's football game in Ireland, the statement read. "Senseless bickering escalated into an unnecessary fight. We have resolved our differences and take full responsibility for our actions. We have apologized to our immediate and extended family, and now extend our apologies to Kansas State University, its alumni, and fans. We regret this incident, have learned from it, and are committed to ensuring it doesn't happen again. Please accept our deepest apologies."
There reportedly were no arrests made following the altercation.
Avery Johnson played well in Kansas State's season-opening loss, finishing 21-of-30 for 273 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 21 rushing yards and a score. The Wildcats came into the contest ranked 17th and were the favorite to win the Big 12 crown this year, though Saturday's loss against No. 23 Iowa State already has them behind the eight ball in conference play.
"I mean that's the thing, regardless of the outcome we have 11 games to play," Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman told reporters after the contest. "We have our back against the wall, but now we've got to reset and regroup and get ready to play."
The game was decided, in part, by two critical fourth-down decisions. The first came with just over eight minutes remaining, when Kansas State chose to go for a 4th-and-2 on its own 29, trailing 17-14. Johnson was stuffed just inches from the first-down marker, and Iowa State extended its lead to 24-14 four plays later.
The second came with 2:26 remaining in the game, when Iowa State converted a 4th-and-3 from Kansas State's 16-yard line. The Cyclones then ran the clock out.
It was Iowa State's third straight win over Kansas State, and the disappointment for the Wildcats extended into the post-game fight between members of Johnson's family.
