Frank Reich, Andrew Luck's Stanford Lose 1st Game, 'This Hurts, I'm Not Going to Lie'
The first game for Stanford under football general manager Andrew Luck and interim head coach Frank Reich didn't go to plan, as the Cardinal lost 23-20 against Hawaii on Saturday night.
"Obviously, this is a tough loss, I give Hawaii credit," Reich told reporters after the contest. "They played a tough game, and made the plays they needed to make to win the game. We came in off of what I thought was a very good week of practice, and a very good six months of preparation and hard work. And so this hurts, I'm not going to lie."
Hawaii won on Kansei Matsuzawa's 38-yard field goal as time expired. It was the first win for the Rainbow Warriors against Stanford in five tries, and the first win for the program over an ACC team ever.
Running back Micah Ford led Stanford with 113 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Quarterback Ben Gulbranson finished just 15-of-30 for 109 yards and an interception.
As for Reich, Luck is conducting a coaching search after firing Troy Taylor in the offseason. But for now, the reins are in Reich's hands, and he wasn't pleased to drop his first contest.
"This stings for all of us, especially the players," he told reporters. "But we know this, the message for the team was: We put in that work, not for one game. It's a long season. So, we didn't get what we wanted today, but we still have a lot of opportunity."
