n 2020, the original Aloha Stadium was closed due to structural concerns, and the Rainbow Warriors football team has since played at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. But in 2022, the state signed off on a $400 million budget for the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District project, with plans to demolish the former Aloha Stadium.
On Wednesday, the Aloha Stadium Authority met to vote on redevelopment contracts, which were awarded to the lone bidder, Aloha Hālawa District Partners.
"Everything I've seen is living up to expectations," Stadium Authority vice chair Andrew Pereira told Ben Angarone of the Honolulu Civil Beat, "and I'm excited that we're on the cusp of moving forward with demolition of the old stadium, the building of a new stadium, and the fruition of an entire new community that I think we'll all be proud of."
Destruction of Aloha Stadium will now proceed starting as early as late August, per Angarone. The original Aloha Stadium featured 50,000 seats, though the new edition will cut that number in more than half.
