Carlos Correa Reportedly Traded to Astros from Twins in 2025 MLB Deadline Reunion

Zach BacharJul 31, 2025

The Houston Astros reportedly acquired a familiar face ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

According to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart, the Astros traded for shortstop Carlos Correa in a deal with the Minnesota Twins. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported the Twins will pay $33 million of the remaining $103.42 million on Correa's contract.

Correa will play third base in Houston to replace the injured Isaac Paredes, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that both teams "bridged a significant financial gap" to make the trade work after it "looked dead 24 hours ago."

Dan Hayes of MLB.com reported the Twins will receive left-handed pitcher Matt Mikulski in return.

Correa spent the first seven years of his MLB career with the Astros. Per McTaggart, Correa let the Twins know that the Astros were the "only team" he'd waive his no-trade clause for.

The financial disagreement may have stemmed from the remainder of Correa's contract, withย USA Today'sย Bob Nightengaleย reporting earlier on Thursday that the Astros asked the Twins to pay "about $50 million" of the $102.5 million left on his deal and add an outfielder before Minnesota rejected the proposal.

Both sides were ultimately able to bridge the gap, and Correa will be heading back to the Astros.

Houston ended up receiving some outfield help anyway. The team reportedly acquired Jesรบs Sรกnchez in a swap with the Miami Marlins on Thursday.

As for Correa, the 30-year-old broke out immediately with Houston as he earned American League Rookie of the Year honors in 2015. Correa made two of his three career All-Star appearances on the Astros and helped the team win the 2017 World Series.

He ended his first stint in Houston with a .277/.356/.481 slash line before joining the Twins ahead of the 2022 season.

Correa wrapped up a stellar 2024 campaign with Minnesota as he posted a .905 OPS, but only appeared in 86 games due toย foot issues.

This season, he's racked up seven home runs and 31 RBI in 93 appearances while slashing .267/.319/.386.

Correa will now look to provide a boost to an Astros squad looking to remain atop the AL West standings, currently holding a five-game lead over the rest of the division with a 62-47 record.
