Windhorst Thinks Lakers May Add 2 Centers in NBA Free Agency Amid Ayton, Capela Rumors

The Los Angeles Lakers could make multiple additions in free agency to address the team's need at center.

"I think they might sign even two centers before this week is up," ESPN's Brian Windhorst said during a Monday appearance on SportsCenter.

Windhorst also reported that veteran Clint Capela is an "option" for Los Angeles, while former Portland Trail Blazers center Deandre Ayton is "on the Lakers' board as well."

Los Angeles' need for frontcourt help was amplified after the team dealt star power forward Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks as part of the blockbuster trade involving Luka Dončić on Feb. 2.

The Lakers initially acquired Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams in a separate deal prior to the Feb. 6 trade deadline, but the swap was later rescinded due to a failed physical.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has been aware of the team's need for a center, telling reporters that the front office will "turn over every stone" to add a contributor at the position and "won't rest until we get it right."

Ayton is a free agent following a contract buyout from the Trail Blazers.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 56.6 percent from the field with Portland last season.

Ayton is skilled offensively, although there are concerns surrounding his defensive intensity as well as his availability. He hasn't appeared in at least 70 games in a season since his rookie year.

Capela has been a force on the glass throughout his 11-year career in the association and transitioned to a bench role towards the end of his 2024-25 campaign with the Atlanta Hawks.

He averaged 8.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last season, hitting 55.9 percent of his shots. Capela also recorded 4.3 contested rebounds on a nightly basis, which ranked No. 10 in the league (via NBA.com).

As the Lakers navigate through free agency, they could end up with both Ayton and Capela.
