Lakers Unveil Purple Statement Jerseys, Use LeBron James' No. 23 in Photo
The Los Angeles Lakers couldn't have picked a better time to reveal a new jersey set for the 2025-26 NBA season.
The franchise shared its new Statement Edition design, which is purple with white lettering and yellow accents. Perhaps not coincidentally, LeBron James' No. 23 jersey was front and center:

This amounts to the Lakers' first official communication since ESPN's Shams Charania sent the NBA world into a frenzy Sunday.
Rich Paul, James' agent, confirmed to Charania the 21-time All-Star is opting in for the 2025-26 season but "values a realistic chance of winning it all" and "wants to make every season he has left count."
The subtext was pretty clear. If LeBron isn't entirely satisfied with Los Angeles' offseason business, he could try to take his services elsewhere.
Of course, the obvious problem is that James is due to earn $52.6 million.
ESPN's Bobby Marks reported Monday on Get Up that "there isn't" a robust trade market for the future Hall of Famer. For almost any team, matching LeBron's salary means giving up multiple useful role players on top of whatever draft capital is included. That's a steep price to pay for a player who's 40 years old and perhaps another year from retirement.
It occasionally happens where an organization will use a star player to promote a jersey he'll never wear. The new threads are released, only for the player to get traded weeks or months later ahead of the season.
In this case, the odds look pretty good that James will don the Lakers' new "Statement Edition" uniform.
