Chris Paul Reportedly Targeted by Clippers, Suns, Hornets in FA amid Mavs Rumors

Timothy RappJun 29, 2025

Chris Paul is going to be a popular target for teams in need of a point guard this summer.

The Phoenix Suns are reportedly considering a reunion with Paul if Tyus Jones departs in free agency, according to NBA reporters Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, while the Los Angeles Clippers are also expected to have interest.

The Charlotte Hornets were additionally mentioned in that report as potential suitors, but they reportedly traded for point guard Collin Sexton on Sunday, which likely extinguished any CP3 interest:

Finally, the Dallas Mavericks have rumored interest as well, per that report, but are "widely regarded as a strong favorite to come to terms with another former All-Star—Brooklyn's D'Angelo Russell—once free agency officially beings Monday night... essentially because the Mavericks regard Russell as far more attainable. Paul does not appear to be interested in spending another season in Texas with his children, both teenagers, in Southern California."

The Suns are loaded with combo guards and options on the wing, including Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neal and rookies Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea—and they also have a glut of centers in Mark Williams, rookie Khaman Maluach and Nick Richards—but point guard is a major need.

That makes a reunion with Paul logical, at least from Phoenix's perspective. Granted, it's also possible the Suns will go the trade route to address the position, given their depth at other positions.

The Clippers, meanwhile, could use depth behind James Harden, assuming he returns. Paul would slot in nicely as affordable depth at the position.

The 40-year-old averaged 8.8 points and 7.4 assists in 28 minutes per game for the San Antonio Spurs last season, shooting 42.7 percent from the field, 37.7 percent from three and most importantly appearing in all 82 games. Paul still has some tread on the proverbial tires, and it's easy enough to see why either the Suns or Clippers would be interested.
