Lakers' Salary Cap for NBA Free Agency After LeBron Opts In, DFS Opts Out of Contracts

Timothy RappJun 29, 2025

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is opting into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, his agent Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania on Sunday.

Shortly after, Dorian Finney-Smith opted out of his $15.4 million deal.

Those two moves left the Lakers with just under $200 million in cap allocations, according to Spotrac, though that also includes cap holds on a number of players. The Lakers are now $19.7 million clear of the dreaded second apron.

Paul had some interesting quotes about James' future while announcing his decision to opt in.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," he told Charania. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career."

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future," he continued. "We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

The subtext there seems clear enough: James' camp understands the Lakers are going to build around Luka Dončić going forward, but also wants to make sure that doing so best aligns with James having the best chance to win another title in the twilight of his career.

It will be interesting to see what happens if James decides that Lakers are no longer striking that balance, especially given that the team simply doesn't have a ton of wiggle room below the second apron. Strengthening the roster is going to take some creative wheeling and dealing from Pelinka.

There have already been a flurry of trades this offseason, and plenty more are expected. James was not necessarily expected to be one of the names on the move, but Paul's remarks on Sunday—combined with the Lakers' payroll situation—certainly opened up that possibility in a very real way.
