DeWanna Bonner Waived by Caitlin Clark's Fever amid WNBA Rumors, Aari McDonald Signed
Veteran forward DeWanna Bonner was expected to bring a championship mentality to the Indiana Fever, but her tenure with the team lasted less than six months.
Following rumors of her unhappiness with the team, Bonner was officially waived on Wednesday. Indiana announced it signed guard Aari McDonald for the remainder of the season in a corresponding move.
Bonner appeared in nine games and made three starts for the Fever before missing each of the last five games for personal reasons. She averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes per game, a far cry from her typical level of production. She hadn't averaged under 10 points in any of her previous 15 years in the WNBA, and the last time she played under 25 minutes per game was her rookie season in 2009.
Rumblings of Bonner's impending exit from Indiana surfaced Tuesday, asย Annie Costabileย of Front Office Sportsย reportedย that, "According to multiple league sources, the two-time WNBA champion has no interest in returning to play for the Fever." Costabile named the Phoenix Mercury or the Atlanta Dream as her "preferred landing spots" and pointed to her lack of playing time as the key reason she wanted out.
"Multiple sources told Front Office Sports that the fit in Indiana was 'off' from the beginning. Bonnerโwho was signed to be an anchor with championship experience for the team's young coreโwas expected to be a starter," Costabile stated.
Bonner will now try to get that chance with a new franchise. She spent the first 10 seasons of her career with the Mercury before spending the last five with the Connecticut Sun. She won WNBA titles in Phoenix in 2009 and 2014.
After moving on from Bonner, the Fever will turn their attention to trying to find more consistency this year. Indiana is 7-7 entering Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Sparks (4-11).
