During an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix reported prior to the 2025 NBA draft that he had heard that George was "in play" for a potential trade, but he ultimately wasn't moved.
Ultimately, Philadelphia's position changed when it had the chance to acquire a superstar like Brown.
Brown is coming off the best year in his career, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
George's first season with the Sixers was one to forget, as he was limited to just 41 games due to knee and adductor injuries. He averaged just 16.2 points, marking the first time he's averaged under 20 points since the 2014-15 season, in which he played just six games after working his way back from a devastating leg fracture suffered in a Team USA scrimmage prior to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He also added 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
In addition to George's frequent unavailability, Philadelphia's other star players Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey also endured injury-riddled seasons, being limited to 19 and 52 games last year, respectively. Without the "Big 3" on the floor together throughout the season, the Sixers disappointingly finished with a 24-58 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17 and ending their streak of seven straight seasons with a winning record.
The 2025-26 season was more of the same for George, as he missed the start of the year while recovering from offseason knee surgery. In 37 games, he averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals. He served a 25-game suspension for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy, which he attributed to "improper medication." The Sixers went 45-37 and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals before being swept by the New York Knicks.
By trading George, Philadelphia is shedding significant cap space while also adding youth to the roster. The team used the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft to select Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe, who showed flashes of impressive potential throughout his first season in the NBA and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting.
George is joining a Celtics squad that had a 56-26 record this past season. If he can stay healthy, he will be one of the team's primary options on offense alongside Jayson Tatum. The nine-time All-Star should be motivated to return to his usual form in 2026-27.
Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the Sixers immediately become a contender in the East. If Joel Embiid is healthy, the trio of him, Brown and Tyrese Maxey will be one of the best in the league. Not to mention, the team has a rising star in VJ Edgecombe.
