Kyrie Irving Reportedly Undecided on $43M Player Option amid Mavs Contract Rumors
Kyrie Irving's home for the 2024-25 season is still up in the air.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Dallas Mavericks guard is currently "undecided" about utilizing his player option for 2025-26. The deadline for Irving to opt-in is Tuesday and it would be worth $43 million.
"One source close to the process told The Stein Line that Irving's course, as of Monday night, was still being decided," Stein wrote.
Stein reported that Irving not accepting the player option could signal that he a new contract with the franchise is "likely to be reached by the parties early in free agency." He also reported that Irving could opt-in and then agree to an extension with the team after July 7.
Irving notably suffered a torn ACL in March and is reportedly hoping to return in January 2026.
Prior to suffering the injury, Irving had averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 50 games. He is a nine-time All-Star, three-time All-NBA honoree and was a major contributor to the Mavericks run to the 2023-24 NBA Finals.
If he opts in, he guarantees himself $43 million and could potentially relay a strong second half of the season into a lucrative contract next offseason. However, opting out could make the Mavericks bid against other potential suitors who are willing to wait.
Dallas went 39-43 and missed the postseason. They also offloaded star guard Luka Dončić and will add a notable player with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Irving will likely make the decision with his future in mind but it looks like that verdict will come very close to the deadline.
