Kevin Durant Reacts to Rockets Trade Live on Stage in Video, Talks Timeline of Deal
It's rare that fans are able to break news of a trade to the player, but that's what happened to Kevin Durant on Sunday when the Phoenix Suns agreed to send him to the Houston Rockets.
Durant got to react onstage at Fanatics Fest in New York City when the trade news broke.

Speaking to Kay Adams after his onstage session ended, Durant was careful not to fully break down the fourth wall by saying he "had an idea" something was coming without knowing "exactly when it was going to happen."
The 36-year-old also confirmed he "most definitely" played a role in the Rockets being his landing spot by telling Suns officials where he wanted to go and they were on the list.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the Rockets are sending Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft and five second-round draft picks to Phoenix in exchange for Durant.
A Durant trade coming down as he is at a very high-profile public event where he can immediately address it is either a pure coincidence or pretty genius marketing for himself.
Another amusing part of the video footage is hearing some members of the crowd booing when they found out. It could presumably be due to the fact the event is in New York City and fans were holding out hope the New York Knicks would try to make a push for him even though they reportedly weren't planning to do so.
Ultimately, though, Durant got what he wanted out of this whole situation. Charania reported on June 14 that the 15-time All-Star listed the Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat as his preferred trade destinations.
Those were the only three teams Durant would commit to signing a long-term contract extension with, per Charania.
Now the pressure intensifies for both the Rockets and Durant. This isn't necessarily an all-in move by Houston because the team still has multiple draft picks that would be very appealing in a trade, particularly in 2027 when it has swap rights with the Brooklyn Nets and an unprotected first-rounder from the Suns.
But as far as the 2025-26 season is concerned, the Rockets are counting on Durant to be the go-to scorer in a playoff situation that they didn't have in this year's postseason and lost in the first round as the No. 2 seed in the West to the Golden State Warriors.
Durant's teams haven't won in the postseason since Game 4 of the 2023 Western Conference semifinals against the Denver Nuggets. The Suns lost each of their last six playoff games, including a first-round sweep against the Minnesota Timberwolves last year.
It's hard to blame Durant for the loss to Minnesota. He averaged 26.8 points on 55.2 percent shooting and 6.5 rebounds in the four games.
Alperen Şengün led the Rockets in scoring with 20.9 points per game in the seven-game series against the Warriors.
