LeBron James Jokes Wemby 'Smacking My F--king Shots' Will Cause Him to Retire Sooner
While most of us have been focused on age as the thing that will eventually cause LeBron James to retire from the NBA, it turns out the actual cause might be the difficulty posed by trying to score on Victor Wembanyama.
During his appearance on a live episode of The Shope at Fanatics Fest on Saturday, James joked that Wembanyama "smacking my f--king shots" might force him to walk away from his basketball career sooner than later.
The Lakers have been on the receiving end of many Wembanyama blocks. He has 20 blocks in six games against them over the past two seasons.
James has only played in five of those games, with the Lakers holding a 3-2 record against the Spurs. Wembanyama has beenย creditedย with two blocks against the future Hall of Famer.
If the standard for retirement is being able to score on Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs star is going to end a lot of careers much sooner than anyone anticipates.
Wembanyama has led the NBA in total blocks and blocks per game in each of his first two seasons, even though he has only played 117 out of a possible 164 games.
In just 46 games during the 2024-25 campaign, Wembanyama's 176 total blocks wereย 28 moreย than any other player. Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez was second with 148 in 80 games.
During his historic rookie campaign, Wemby became theย first playerย to record at least 250 blocks in a season since Hassan Whiteside in 2015-16.
Wembanyama isย expectedย to be fully cleared for the start of training camp in September after his 2024-25 season ended on Feb. 21 due to aย blood clotย in his right shoulder.
Hopefully both Wembanyama and James are healthy next season, so we get at least one meeting between the two of them just to see if LeBron is able to attack the basket against him like he has done with virtually every other player in the NBA during his legendary career.
