Alexander Zverev Helps Fan Who Was Struck by Ad Board That Fell From Stadium at Match
German tennis player Alexander Zverev helped a spectator who was hit by a falling panel from an advertisement board during his Wednesday match at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany.
The incident happened as Zverev held a 5-2 lead in his first set against Marcos Giron of the United States at OWL Arena.
According to the tournament website, an advertisement fell from the upper part of the stadium into the crowd, where it struck a 62-year-old woman from Halle.
The Associated Press reported that Zverev and umpire Renaud Lichtenstein then "rushed over with ice to treat her."
Tournament organizers reported that the woman "did not suffer any major injuries and was able to leave the stadium on her own after the shock with an ice pack in her neck handed to her by Alexander Zverev."
The spectator was taken to the hospital after the incident "for safety reasons," according to the tournament.
"There has never been anything like this in our 32-year tournament history. We deeply regret the incident," tournament director Ralf Weber said in a statement.
Organizers said they believed the screws holding the advertisement in place may have come loose because of "drumming against the board," and that all other ads would be checked after the completion of Zverev's match.
Zverev went on to defeat Giron 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the tournament and will advance to face Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 16. He is looking to build on his strong run in the Stuttgart Open, where he finished as runner-up to Taylor Fritz.
