Raptors Reportedly Open to Trading Barrett or Quickley for Upgrade amid Durant Rumors
As the Phoenix Suns continue to try to find a landing spot for star forward Kevin Durant, the Toronto Raptors reportedly could put together an attractive trade package.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Raptors "would be willing to part with either RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley for a significant roster upgrade."
The Raptors were not included on Durant's reported list of preferred destinations, as ESPN's Shams Charania reported that he's hoping to land with the Houston Rockets, Miami Heat or San Antonio Spurs. However, Toronto could still have a chance to acquire him, as Charania added that the Suns "have made clear to the six to eight seriously interested teams that they will make the best deal for the franchise, even if it means trading Durant to a team outside his preferred list."
Durant is entering the final year of his contract and will be making $54.7 million in the 2025-26 season. If a team that isn't on his preferred list still acquires him, it would be gambling on a potential one-year rental rather than guaranteeing a long-term commitment.
Fischer added that in addition to the Raptors making Barrett and Quickley available, league sources "asserted that they could show a willingness to move center Jakob Poeltl as well … provided that the trade in question brought back Durant." Giving up three productive players for a 36-year-old on an expiring contract could be a risk that Toronto is willing to take after missing the playoffs in each of the last three years.
Fischer also explained that the Raptors could be doing some dealing during the NBA draft later this month, which could facilitate negotiations with the Suns.
"The Raptors' No. 9 pick is also increasingly viewed as perhaps the most likely top-10 pick in the draft to be traded," Fischer stated. "My sense is that Toronto would prefer to simply trade down rather than trade out of the first round completely. Perhaps there is some swap potential in a deal with Phoenix and the Suns' No. 29 overall selection."
