76ers Reportedly Look to 'Bridge the Gap' Between Current Roster, Future amid Rumors

Adam WellsJun 12, 2025

Coming off a disastrous 2024-25 season, the Philadelphia 76ers' offseason approach will attempt to meld a quick turnaround while keeping a focus on their long-term future.

In his latest mock draft, The Athletic's Sam Vecenie reported the Sixers want to "bridge the gap" with players currently on their roster and add cost-controlled talent in the 2025 NBA draft.

This would seem to dispel any notion that 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey will strongly consider trading the No. 3 overall pick for a veteran player.

Vecenie's mock does have the Sixers trading out of their spot twice, but they only end up moving down three spots to No. 6 and picking up selections at No. 18 and 33.

One of the big issues for the 76ers going into next season is having $144.8 million committed to three players. If Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George had played up to their full potential last season, that amount of financial investment wouldn't be a concern.

Unfortunately, that trio combined to play 112 games in 2024-25. The injury issues for Embiid and George are more concerning than Maxey's because they are both over the age of 30, to say nothing of Embiid's long history of injuries.

Even though things seem bleak for the 76ers because of how much money they invested last summer only to finish 24-58, there are actually a few reasons to be optimistic about their short- and long-term futures.

If the 76ers stay in their current draft position, they could end up with another quality young player. If they decide to trade down and accrue more assets in this draft or in future years, it increases their flexibility going forward.

Maxey is only 24 and one year removed from being an All-Star. Jared McCain was on track to win Rookie of the Year before a torn meniscus ended his season after 23 games.

Given how wide open things could be in the Eastern Conference next season, it wouldn't be a shock if the 76ers are in the mix for at least a play-in berth, if not a top-six seed as long as they don't have all of the injury issues they had this season.
