Lee Corso's Final ESPN 'College GameDay' Appearance Set for Texas vs. Ohio State
Legendary ESPN college football broadcaster Lee Corso is set to end his career where his most famous tradition began.
ESPN announced on Tuesday that Corso's final College GameDay appearance is set for the marquee Week 1 matchup between Texas and Ohio State on Aug. 30. Corso's first-ever headgear pick was made at Ohio State in 1996.
Corso's career with College GameDay began in 1987. He announced in April that his retirement will come just a few weeks after he turns 90 on Aug. 7.
"My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years," Corso said in a statement. "I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement."
Corso has made 430 headgear selections over his career and has gone 286-144, per ESPN. The Buckeyes lead his all-time picks with 45 total selections. He's been known for wearing helmets, mascot heads and other hats, as well as dressing up as mascots like the Fighting Irish leprechaun from Notre Dame.
"Lee Corso has developed a special connection to generations of fans through his entertaining style and iconic headgear picks," ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said. "Lee is one of the most influential and beloved figures in the history of college football and our ESPN team will celebrate his legendary career during his final College GameDay appearance this August."
The defending champion Buckeyes are expected to contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff once again, but they will face an early test from a Longhorns team set to utilize Arch Manning as its starting quarterback. It will be a bittersweet moment when Corso makes his final pick during Ohio State's home opener against Texas later this summer.
