Chris Paul Says Being Near Family Will Be Priority in 2025 NBA Free Agency Decision

Scott PolacekJun 6, 2025

Chris Paul is 40 years old and coming off his 20th NBA season, but he doesn't sound like he's looking at retiring this summer.

On Thursday, he said that being near his family, who live in Los Angeles, could be a priority in his decision-making process.

"My son just turned 16," Paul said on The Pat McAfee Show. "My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I've lived without them. I go to San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State—they were in Houston with me—Oklahoma City… I've been around a few teams, but I've been away from them the last six years. It's a little different. That's the conversation."

Paul added, "I want to hoop because I love to hoop. But, at the same time, I want to be dad."

The future Hall of Famer played last season for the San Antonio Spurs and appeared in all 82 games while averaging 8.8 points and 7.4 assists. While it wasn't the same production from his peak, his durability and veteran leadership on a team with a young core stood out.

He has also bounced around of late, as he said, and could be looking for one final contract before retirement.

In addition to family, Paul may consider his chances of winning a title when making his decision. After all, about the only thing missing from his resume is a championship despite coming close a number of times.

His list of accomplishments includes 11 All-NBA selections, nine All-Defensive nods, a Rookie of the Year, five assist titles, six steal titles, 12 All-Star Game selections and a spot on the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.

Paul is one of the best point guards in the history of the league and would surely be an intriguing addition for several teams looking for backcourt depth and that veteran leadership he provides.

But it seems like potential suitors close to his family may have the advantage.
