Kevin Young, BYU Reportedly Agree to Contract Extension Before AJ Dybantsa's Arrival
BYU and men's basketball head coach Kevin Young have agreed to a long-term contract extension, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
The 44-year-old just led BYU to a 26-10 record (14-6 Big 12) and Sweet Sixteen appearance in his first season running the Cougars.

Now BYU will welcome in small forward AJ Dybantsa, ranked first on ESPN's, Rivals' and On3's class of 2025 recruit rankings.
Young arrived at BYU with an impressive resume. He spent five seasons as a G League head coach at three different stops (Utah Flash, Iowa Energy and Delaware 76ers) before becoming an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016.
He stayed in Philadelphia through 2020 before joining the Phoenix Suns as an assistant. The 2020-21 Suns team notably won the franchise's Western Conference title since 1993. He was promoted to associate head coach and remained in that position until 2024.
Young was a candidate for the Suns' head coaching gig in 2023 after the team parted ways with Monty Williams, but Phoenix decided on hiring Frank Vogel. However, Phoenix agreed on a new contract with Young to make him the NBA's highest-paid assistant (more than $2 million annually).
One year later, Young left to become BYU's head coach. He led the Cougars to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2010 and only their second overall since 1981, when they made the Elite Eight.
Expectations will be high in 2025-26 with Dybantsa aboard. BYU is also adding a couple 4-stars in center Xavion Stanton and power forward Chamberlain Burgess. The Cougars also did well in the transfer portal, notably adding Baylor freshman guard Rob Wright (11.5 PPG, 4.2 APG).
BYU, of course, brings back talent from last year's roster, including leading scorer Richie Saunders (16.5 PPG) and second-leading scorer Egor Demin (10.6 PPG).
And the Cougars will have Young leading the way again as they look for their first-ever Final Four appearance.
