Patriots' Josh McDaniels 'Not Concerned' About Stefon Diggs amid Return to OTAs

Jack MurrayJun 2, 2025

The New England Patriots appear to be content with wide receiver Stefon Diggs after his return to OTAs.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels spoke about Diggs' and said that he is "not concerned" about Diggs being prepared for the season despite missing the OTA sessions last week.

"I know he's staying up on the information and material and there's so many things and opportunities for us to teach all our guys going forward -- between the rest of the practices in the spring and going into the summer and the many days we have before we actually kick the ball off in September," McDaniels said, per Mike Reiss of ESPN. "I'm not concerned about Stef in that regard."

Diggs did not attend May's OTA sessions and was notably seen on a boat in Miami with an unidentified pink substance. Despite the distraction and his absence at the start of OTAs, McDaniels said it can be common for players to miss the voluntary workouts and that the team is "excited" that he was present on Monday.

"It's a voluntary part of the year, we know that," McDaniels said, per Reiss. "I don't know if we have ever had perfect attendance at these things in general. As a coach, selfishly, you love it when they're all here because you feel like you have them all in the classroom and on the field and all the rest of it. He's here today and we're excited to have an opportunity to work with the guys that are out here and available to us."

Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million deal with the Patriots in the offseason. The team does have an "out" after one season and he only has $16.6 million guaranteed at signing, per Spotrac.

He is currently recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered during the 2024 season with the Houston Texans. Prior to the injury, he had 47 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns in eight games.

While the 31-year-old could be a bit past his prime, he still should be a significant upgrade to the Patriots' offense. Tight end Hunter Henry led the team with 674 receiving yards in 2024 while wide receiver Demario Douglas was next with 621 yards.
