Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
This is Diggs' first appearance since a viral video surfaced in which he was on a boat and holding a bag with what appeared to be a pink substance inside.
Head coach Mike Vrabel said last week the video was "something that we're aware of."
"Obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field," he told reporters. "We're hoping that with our time here on the field today, that when we don't have a script and we're on the call periods, that we're making great decisions. The message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions. Any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him, I and the club."
Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with New England in March, but Scott Zolak of 98.5 The Sports Hub (via NBC Sports Boston's Justin Leger) reported it's not out of the question the Pats could try to move on from him already.
Zolak said that "there are some other things that I've heard that put some things in question," so it goes beyond the boat video.
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio examined Diggs' contract and found the four-time Pro Bowler has likely received $4 million from the Pats already. Should he fail his physical—he suffered a season-ending torn ACL in 2024—the team might be able to cut him without paying him much more than that.
Florio reported there's also language that says Diggs "will not participate, and is not engaged and will not engage, in any conduct or activity that is illegal, unlawful or immoral." New England may have another out if it can prove anything shown in the video falls under that description.
Assuming Diggs remains on the roster when the 2025 regular season kicks off, this isn't how he and the Patriots envisioned their partnership starting.
