Carlos Alcaraz Knocks Out Ben Shelton In Thrilling Showdown
3 of 7
Carlos Alcaraz is back in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros for the fourth consecutive year after defeating Ben Shelton in four sets.
The American came out aggressive early, throwing haymakers at Alcaraz, leading to a 67-minute first set, where he had three set points but fell in a thrilling tiebreaker.
Shelton pushed the Spaniard early in the second set, creating six breakpoint opportunities before failing to convert in a 13-minute opening game.
The two exchanged holds until Alcaraz broke Shelton late in the second set, seizing control of the match.
In the third set, Shelton broke Alcaraz to take a 3-1 lead; however, the four-time major champion broke back in the next game.
But Shelton got another opening and broke Alcaraz again to extend the match to a fourth set.
Alcaraz stayed consistent and benefited from Shelton's unforced errors late to win the fourth set.
Alcaraz will face Tommy Paul in the quarterfinal, in a matchup of players who've already had a few thrilling matches against each other.
Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe First American Men's Duo To Reach Quarters Since 1996
4 of 7
After playing back-to-back five-set matches, Tommy Paul needed less than two hours to defeat an in-form Alexei Popyrin in straight sets.
The 28-year-old saved nine of 10 break points, committing just 22 unforced errors.
The No. 12 seed will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal, in a rematch of their 2024 Paris Olympics quarterfinal match, which the Spaniard won in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Frances Tiafoe continued his impressive run with a straight-set win over Daniel Altmaier.
Tiafoe, who rarely achieved clay-court success prior to this year, is the first American man to reach the French Open quarterfinal without dropping a set since Andre Agassi in 1995.
The 27-year-old has won 57 of his 61 service games, his forehand is currently at its peak, and his net play has never been better.
Lorenzo Musetti Continues Impressive Spring
5 of 7
Lorenzo Musetti’s surgical spring continues.
The Italian dispatched Holger Rune in four sets to reach the quarterfinal at Roland-Garros for the first time in his career and improve his record on clay to 18-3 this season.
Musetti used his defense to wear down the Norwegian, who committed 53 unforced errors across the match.
In the quarterfinal, the 23-year-old will face Frances Tiafoe, who has yet to drop a set this tournament.
Musetti will likely enter as the favorite, but considering Tiafoe's current form and confidence, this one could go either way.
Iga Swiatek Wins Instant Classic
6 of 7
Iga Swiatek could not have asked for a worse start.
The three-time defending champion quickly found herself down a set and a break against Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina was in steady control, dominating with baseline aggression while teeing off on Swiatek's second serve.
But the 'Queen of Clay' was not ready to go home.
Swiatek found her trademark physical tennis as the match progressed and continued to wear down her opponent, breaking the 25-year-old's serve late in the decisive set before holding to clinch a spot in the quarterfinal round.
Swiatek has now won 25 consecutive matches at Roland-Garros and will face off against another heavy server in Elina Svitolina.
Aryna Sabalenka Cruises By Amanda Anisimova After Slow Start
7 of 7
Aryna Sabalenka put her previous struggles against Amanda Anisimova behind her and defeated the American in straight sets to move on to the quarterfinals.
After narrowly escaping 7-5 in a 49-minute opening set, Sabalenka found her rhythm in the second set, breaking Anisimova right away.
From there, the three-time major champion dominated.
Sabalenka found the serving success she lost late in the first set, winning 75 percent of points behind her first serve while committing just eight unforced errors in the second set.
Sabalenka, who has yet to drop a set this entire tournament, will face Zheng Qinwen in the quarters.
