Carlos Alcaraz Struggles Down The Stretch
3 of 5
Carlos Alcaraz coasted to a two-set lead in just 73 minutes, limiting his opponent, Damir Dzumhur, to just four games.
It appeared inevitable that the Spaniard would secure his fourth consecutive Round of 16 spot on the French clay.
Then, out of nowhere, it all changed.
In the third set, Dzumhur started grinding Alcaraz out, while the Spaniard himself began to show dips in form, losing 7 of 11 points at the net after winning 80 percent in the first two sets.
Additionally, he committed five more unforced errors in the third set than in the first two combined.
To open the fourth set, Alcaraz was broken right away before finding just enough to emerge victorious.
Three American Men Advance To Round of 16 For First Time Since 1995
4 of 5
For the first time since 1995, the Round of 16 at Roland-Garros will feature at least three American men.
Tommy Paul kickstarted the day by winning a thrilling five-setter against Karen Khachanov in a match that spanned over four hours.
Meanwhile, Ben Shelton made it look easy, firing blistering serves at opponent Matteo Gigante en route to a straight-set victory.
Then, Frances Tiafoe defeated American compatriot Sebastian Korda in straight sets to reach the Round of 16 for the first time in his career.
Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek Continue Dominance
5 of 5
Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, the two favorites to win this year's edition of Roland-Garros, entered the third round with few struggles in their opening matches.
That trend continued on Friday.
While Danilovic made Sabalenka work for points on her serve, the World No. 1 was dominant on return, breaking Danilovic five times while winning 75 percent of points on her opponent's second serve.
Sabalenka also thrived at the net, where she won 91 percent of points.
Swiatek also excelled on her opponent's second serve, securing 62 percent of the points against Jaqueline Cristian.
The three-time defending champion saved all six breakpoints and continued to play at a physical level that her opponents couldn't keep up with.
Both players are operating in top form and continue to look the part of a favorite.
