French Open 2025 Results, Day 5 Bracket Winners, Losers, Highlights at Roland-Garros

Nicholas NathansonMay 29, 2025

On Thursday, top-ranked Jannik Sinner defeated Richard Gasquet in straight sets, putting an end to the 38-year-old Frenchman’s career.

A few hours later, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic easily defeated the fiery home crowd favorite Corentin Moutet.

However, the day did have some notable upsets, with No. 9 seed Alex de Minaur and No. 19 seed Jakub Mensik each bowing out, despite holding two-set leads.

Home favorite Arthur Fils was in danger of joining the duo but was able to advance in a four-hour-and-thirty-minute, five-set thriller.

In the women's draw, the top three Americans, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Madison Keys, each advanced with straight-set wins, while World No. 6 Mirra Andreeva exacted revenge on Ashlyn Krueger, who stunned her in the second round of the 2024 US Open.

Here are the full results from Thursday's play along with the biggest takeaways.

Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner Cruise By Crowd Favorites

3 of 5
2025 Roland-Garros - Day 5
Novak Djokovic

Aside from losing his first service game, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic was perfect against Corentin Moutet.

Given Moutet's stature, he was unable to outhit Djokovic, so the game plan revolved around making Djokovic move non-stop with an array of slice dropshots and well-angled baseline strokes.

However, the Serbian moved with an ease we haven't seen recently—perhaps since the Miami Open—showing that at 38 years old, physicality is not as much a problem as we thought.

In another big matchup, three-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner defeated 38-year-old Frenchman Richard Gasquet, sending him off to retirement on his home court.

Sinner continued his torrid form, winning 85 percent of points on first serve while committing just 20 unforced errors.

As most players are on tour, Gasquet was unable to keep up with Sinner's physicality, often on the losing end of long, intense rallies.

Sinner has now won 16 consecutive Grand Slam matches and, along with Carlos Alcaraz, is the favorite to hoist the trophy at Roland-Garros.

Arthur Fils Escapes In Absolute Thriller

2025 French Open - Day Five
Arthur Fils

Chaos characterized the early slate of matches in the men's draw on Thursday.

No. 9 seed Alex de Minaur raced off to a 6-2, 6-2 lead before opponent Alexander Bublik dominated on serve, pulling out an unlikely win.

Then, No. 19 Jakub Mensik raced off to a 6-2, 6-1 lead in just 72 minutes before stunningly falling to 21-year-old Portuguese qualifier Henrique Rocha.

However, Arthur Fils made sure to avoid the same fate.

After blowing a two-set lead against Jaime Munar and trailing by a break in the fifth set while dealing with an injury, Fils, fueled by his home crowd, pulled off an improbable victory to keep his hopes of a deep run alive.

On Saturday, the Frenchman will face Andrey Rublev, which is expected to be another difficult challenge.

Top Three American Woman Advance

2025 French Open - Day Five
Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff’s serving woes continued in the second round.

Despite winning in straight sets, Gauff double-faulted six times and was broken five times by 18-year-old qualifier Tereza Valentova.

Gauff managed to win just 3 of 16 points on her second serve.

This was nowhere near the American's best match, but she played a solid enough return game and benefitted from Valentova's inconsistencies and inability to keep up in long baseline rallies.

Her American compatriot No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula played a much cleaner match en route to a straight-set victory over Ann Li.

Pegula won 74 percent of points on her first serve, thwarting off six of seven breakpoint opportunities

One-time major champion Madison Keys also dominated, defeating Katie Boulter in straight sets.

Keys won 80 percent of points on her first serve and committed just 23 unforced errors.

The top three Americans are capable of making deep runs but will each face their own set of challenges going forward.
