Carlos Alcaraz Handles Business Like Usual
3 of 6
Despite dropping a set, Carlos Alcaraz was otherwise perfect in his second-round match against Fabian Marozsan.
The four-time major champion dazzled with jaw-dropping athleticism and impressive net play.
He also remained ultra-consistent, hitting 25 or fewer unforced errors for the second consecutive match.
The defending champion improved to 17-1 on the clay-court circuit this season and is not expected to face any real challenge until a fourth-round matchup against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who he's dominated in back-to-back years.
Tommy Paul Survives In Thriller
4 of 6
For the better part of one hour and eleven minutes, Tommy Paul looked like he was on his way to becoming the latest American to depart early from Roland-Garros.
His opponent, World No. 124 Marton Fucsovics, had won 28 of 29 points on his first serve in both sets and 14 of 15 points at the net en route to a two-set lead.
After dominating in the third set, the momentum shifted in Paul's favor.
However, it was only for a moment.
The one-time major semifinalist found himself in another improbable hole—perhaps insurmountable this time—down 5-3, two points away from being sent home.
Then Paul played the resilient tennis that has helped him achieve a career-best World No. 9 ranking this year, breaking Fucsovics' serve in consecutive games to win the fourth set in thrilling fashion.
In the decisive set, the pair traded breaks before Paul needed 10 minutes to win his third service game.
Paul was able to break Fucsovics' serve yet again before closing out the near four-hour, five-set thriller.
An Injured Casper Ruud Bows Out Early, Stefanos Tsitsipas' Struggles Continue
5 of 6
For the first time since 2018—when he was beginning to make a name for himself on the ATP Tour—Casper Ruud has failed to reach the third round of the French Open.
The two-time finalist entered Roland-Garros in impeccable form after lifting his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the Madrid Open weeks ago.
However, as the match progressed, Ruud's fitness struggles became more and more glaring, and he managed to win just one game in the final two sets against the unseeded Nuno Borges.
Following the match, Ruud revealed that he had been battling an injury leading up to this week.
"For the last couple of weeks I've been kind of struggling a little bit with knee pain on and off," Ruud said in his post-match press conference.
The Norwegian's unlikely loss paves the way for American Tommy Paul to make a deep run. The two would have likely faced off in the fourth round.
The draw was shaken up elsewhere as former French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to Matteo Gigante in four sets.
Tsitsipas was the overwhelming favorite but struggled with consistency, firing 49 unforced errors while failing to convert on 11 of 13 breakpoint opportunities.
Tsitsipas' loss opens up the door for Ben Shelton, who he would have faced in the third round.
Iga Swiatek Defeats Emma Raducanu With Ease
6 of 6
The streak continues for Iga Swiatek, who needed just one hour and nineteen minutes to defeat Emma Raducanu en route to her 23rd consecutive victory at Roland-Garros.
Swiatek demonstrated her dominance against the one-time major champion, winning 71 percent of points behind her first serve.
Additionally, she won all nine points at the net and hit 32 winners to just 22 unforced errors.
After months of uncharacteristic struggles, it appears the "queen of clay" is back in top form in perfect time.
The 23-year-old's next challenge is likely to come in the fourth round against Jelena Ostapenko or Elena Rybakina.
