Novak Djokovic Eyes Quick Start, Alexander Zverev Should Be Able To Get Back On Track
3 of 5
Novak Djokovic will take on American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the French Open, hoping to kickstart his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam.
The 38-year-old has endured fitness struggles and bouts of inconsistency since taking home the Olympic gold medal here nine months ago; however, he enters with tons of encouragement after recently winning the Geneva Open, becoming the third-ever player to win 100 tour-level titles.
While the Serbian is far from his best, Mackenzie McDonald lacks the overall tools to pose any significant threat.
Furthermore, Djokovic holds a significant mental edge and has reached at least the quarterfinal every year here since 2010.
It’s possible that Djokovic could drop a set given his tendency for slow starts in Slams, but as long as he can limit long points and serve well, the prospects of a monumental upset are extremely unlikely.
The same can be said for No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, who has endured quite a difficult year so far with bouts of inconsistency.
The 28-year-old could not have asked for a better opening match than Learner Tien— an extremely talented but overall inexperienced player on the clay-court surface.
Even with the 2024 French Open runner-up struggling with form, it's not expected that he faces too many challenges.
Joao Fonseca Will Earn His First French Open Victory
4 of 5
Beware, Hubert Hurkacz; Joao Fonseca is ready to showcase his skills to the French crowd.
Fonseca finished the 2024 calendar year by winning the Next Gen ATP Finals. Then, when 2025 began, he stunned Andrey Rublev in the opening round of the 2025 Australian Open—before later raising his maiden title at the Argentina Open in February.
While the 18-year-old Brazilian has not had consecutive wins since the Miami Open, his raw athleticism and blistering groundstrokes make him a dangerous opponent on the clay surface.
It may go the full five sets, but Fonseca should be able to earn his first win here at Roland Garros.
Coco Gauff Will Begin With Extremely Favorable Matchup
5 of 5
Coco Gauff enters the French Open in top form after reaching back-to-back finals at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open.
The 21-year-old could not have asked for a better opening round opponent than Olivia Gadecki, who will be making her Roland Garros debut.
Gauff's double faults have become a glaring issue, but they shouldn't affect her first-round match.
Gauff should be able to win this match in straight sets, improving her record in the first round of Grand Slams to 20-3.
