Pelicans Reportedly Hope to 'Make Things Work' with Zion Williamson amid Trade Rumors
The New Orleans Pelicans are looking to continue the team's partnership with star forward Zion Williamson moving forward, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
"Amid no shortage of speculation about the Pelicans deciding to outright shop Williamson for the first time after six frustration-filled seasons, sources say that the lottery assignment was indeed intended to convey the message that New Orleans' new front office, now headed by Louisiana native Joe Dumars, wants to try again to make things work with Williamson as the team's centerpiece," Stein reported Sunday.
The Pelicans wrapped up a 21-61 finish during the 2024-25 season, marking the worst record the organization has held since their 2004-05 campaign.
Williamson, who appeared in just 30 games due to back issues, was involved in trade rumors as the regular season came to a close. He later represented the Pelicans at the 2025 NBA draft lottery.
New Orleans eventually parted ways with executive vice president David Griffin, replacing him with Dumars.
With Dumars now in the front office, the Pelicans are reportedly focused on keeping Williamson.
It's easy to see why, as the 24-year-old's unique blend of speed and athleticism at his position makes him one of the league's top threats around the rim when healthy.
Williamson averaged 24.6 points in just 28.6 minutes per game during the regular season, pulling down 7.2 rebounds and dishing out a career-high 5.3 assists on a nightly basis. He also shot 57.6 percent on two-point field goals.
As New Orleans looks to bounce back in its 2025-26 season, moving on from Williamson doesn't seem to be on the front office's radar.
