Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray End Coaching Partnership Before Roland-Garros 2025

After working together for only six months, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray announced Tuesday that they have ended their player-coach relationship.

Shortly after his retirement from playing tennis last year, Murray transitioned into coaching and took on his former on-court rival in Djokovic as his first major client.

With Murray guiding him, Djokovic was eliminated in the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier this year. That will prove to be the only Grand Slam tournament at which Murray coaches Djokovic, as Tuesday's change was made less than two weeks before the start of the 2025 French Open.

Per BBC's Russell Fuller, the termination of the partnership between Djokovic and Murray was said to be a mutual decision.

In a statement, Djokovic expressed his appreciation foe Murray, saying: "Thank you, Coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun and support over last six months on and off the court—really enjoyed deepening our friendship together."

Murray provided a similar statement, saying: "Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together, and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months. I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season."

The 37-year-old Djokovic is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, but his results this year have been well below his usual standards, as he has a record of just 12-7 in 2025.

Djokovic has not yet won a tournament this year and made it to only one final, losing to 19-year-old Jakub Menšík in the Miami Open final back in March.

Since then, Djoker has gone 0-2 suffering early exits at the hands of Alejandro Tabilo and Matteo Arnaldi at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Open, respectively.

Both of those tournaments are played on clay, making them important tune-ups for the French Open. Having lost to both Tabilo and Arnaldi in straight sets, Djokovic is clearly nowhere near the form he needs to achieve in order to vie for a French Open title.

Djokovic is the all-time leader in career men's Grand Slam titles with 24, and three of those titles have come at the French Open, including his most recent Roland Garros title in 2023.

Since winning three of the four Grand Slams in 2023, Djokovic is in the midst of a drought, as he has not won a Grand Slam title in his past five entries.

He has made only one Grand Slam final during that time as well, which begs the question of whether his dominance over men's tennis has come to an end.

Clearly in need of a spark, Djokovic made a change by parting ways with Murray, although it isn't yet clear who his coach will be or if he will even have one when he takes the court at the French Open in a couple of weeks.
