Pelicans' Zion Williamson Feels 'Really Good,' Details Offseason Workout Regimen
New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson spoke optimistically about the 2025-26 NBA season.
During the team's media day Tuesday, Williamson told reporters, "I feel really good going into the season" and detailed his offseason fitness regimen:
There's no need to dive too much into well-worn territory. When healthy, Williamson has justified all of the hype that surrounded him coming out of college. But the 2024-25 season was another in which his availability was significantly limited.
The 6'6" forward appeared in 30 games, averaging 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists. He suffered a hamstring strain last November that caused him to miss two months, and then a bone bruise in his back led New Orleans to shut him down in March.
The Pelicans didn't have much of a choice when they signed Williamson to a five-year, $197.2 million extension. There's no way they could've recouped equal value in a trade back then, and letting him walk as a free agent was out of the question.
Still, an investment of that size was a risk for the organization and the past year showed why.
The chatter over Williamson's future in New Orleans is getting louder. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported in April "there is skepticism in some corners of the league that the Pelicans will actually persist with Williamson as their franchise centerpiece."
Because he has been front and center for so long, it's a little easy to forget Williamson only turned 25 in July. There's time for him to alter the expected trajectory for his career.
Staying healthy is first and foremost the priority in that regard.
