DeMar DeRozan Says 'I Don't Regret' Agreeing to Kings Contract in 2024 Sign-and-Trade
This past offseason, DeMar DeRozan went from a Chicago Bulls team that had lost in the Play-In Tournament two years in a row to a Sacramento Kings team that... just lost in the Play-In Tournament.
While that turned out to be quite the lateral move, DeRozan isn't lamenting his decision.
"I don't regret anything," he told reporters Thursday in the wake of last night's 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, ending the Kings' season. "I don't think you can live life with regrets."
DeRozan agreed to a three-year, $74 million deal as part of a three-team sign-and-trade this offseason that included the San Antonio Spurs landing Harrison Barnes and the Bulls acquiring Chris Duarte and a pair of second-round picks.
The Kings then trended even further into Bulls West territory when they brought aboard Zach LaVine in a midseason three-team trade that sent DeAaron Fox to the Spurs.
The result of both of those moves was a 40-42 record and immediate elimination from the Play-In Tournament (though the Kings also landed three first-round draft picks, two unprotected, and three second-round round picks in the Fox deal).
Since the LaVine trade, the Kings went 16-19, including Wednesday's loss. And in the aftermath of that defeat, general manager Monte McNair and the team mutually parted ways. It's been a season of turnover in general for these Kings—head coach Mike Brown was also fired back in late December.
DeRozan was typically solid in the 2024-25 season, averaging 22.2 points per game. As for his future in Sacramento, however, that may be contingent on how the team approaches its upcoming offseason.
"Just the structure and a foundation of a compete level," he told reporters when asked about what factors he will consider while considering his future options. "I think all year we had such an uncertainty of everything, you can't really operate in any successful environment if you have so much uncertainty."
