Latest Rumors, Predictions for Russell Westbrook, More Potential 2025 NBA Free Agents

Erik BeastonApr 13, 2025

While the NBA wraps up its regular season and prepares for the playoffs, some team officials are already looking toward the off-season and the moves they can potentially make in free agency to secure top-tier talent and compete for the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

With stars such as LeBron James, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook all potentially reach free agency this year. Will they end up elsewhere or will they simply utilize free agency as a bargaining chip to earn themselves bigger paydays?

Let's take a look with this early free agency preview, including rumors and predictions for the top stars.

LeBron James

Houston Rockets v Los Angeles Lakers

Brian Windhorst of ESPN previously reported that James could "simply opt into his $53 million for next year, or he could sign another one-year max deal with a player option to keep his year-to-year flexibility as he moves into his 40s."

He also noted that it was possible the four-time league MVP and NBA champion could give the team a discount in an attempt to sign more talent for next season, especially with Luka Dončić on-board.

All three are viable options for the face of the NBA but over the years, James has preferred the flexibility of signing the one-year max deals, especially as the 40-year-old mulls the eventual end of his playing career.

That scenario would likely see James opt out, explore free agency, and inevitably re-sign with the Lakers as Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reported that he is likely to return to Los Angeles.

If there was another team that could potentially pursue James, it would be the Golden State Warriors, who previously attempted to trade for the league's all-time leading scorer at the 2024 trade deadline, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne.

The Lakers have the best situation for James as playing with Dončić gives him that second megastar he needs to make a legitimate run at a fifth NBA title. He may opt out and see what is out there, but expect the best player of his generation to return to the team for whom he has already won a championship and continue chasing another.

Prediction: LeBron opts out, re-signs with Los Angeles on a one-year deal

Russell Westbrook

DENVER NUGGETS VS MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES, NBA

Despite a $3.4 million player option, Sam Amick and Tony Jones of The Athletic reported. Russell Westbrook's future with the Denver Nuggets is uncertain.

Westbrook's play diminished down the stretch, to the point that he was ultimately benched against the Sacramento Kings by interim head coach David Adelman.

With Jalen Pickett emerging for the team, and Westbrook's on-court volatility leaving the Nuggets wondering if he is going to shoot a game-winner or cost the team a win via an unnecessary foul, it is entirely possible the team decides it would rather move on from the future Hall of Famer.

Westbrook is averaging 13.2 points, five rebounds, 6.1 assists, is shooting 44.8 percent from the floor. For the $3.3 million the Nuggets paid the 36-year-old this season, he was still a valuable addition and will be for any team that potentially signs him should Denver cut ties with the guard.

He could be the veteran leadership on a young squad like Orlando or could start in Sacramento, bringing them stability at the point guard position and teaming up with DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Domantas Sabonis, all of whom could benefit from his elite passing skills.

Prediction: Denver moves on from Westbrook, who signs with the Kings

James Harden

3 of 3
Los Angeles Clippers v Sacramento Kings

Windhorst also reported that Harden is likely to opt out of his deal with the Los Angeles Clippers and after taking several pay cuts and modest contracts in recent years, will seek a raise amid his All-Star season.

"The Clippers have made a series of decisions aiming at potentially protecting cap space for 2026 and giving Harden, who will turn 36 this summer, a new multiyear contract that might require a new plan," the report continued.

Harden's ability to get a new deal out of the Clippers will likely determine the team's willingness to sign him to a long-term deal at this point in his career.

Harden averaged 22.6 points and 8.7 assists (best on the team), and shot 40.7 percent from the floor this season.

Whether that stat line is enough to convince team officials that Harden has plenty left to offer the organization remains to be seen but if the Clippers are not willing to give him a deal, another title contender likely will have no problem signing a player who is still a high-level scorer and playmaker.

Prediction: Harden opts out, re-signs with Los Angeles on a three-year deal
