Vincent Kompany Ripped by Fans for Bayern Munich's UCL QF 1st Leg Loss to Inter Milan

Thomas Müller's storybook ending is in serious jeopardy after Bayern Munich lost 2-1 to Inter Milan in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie.

Müller came on as a second-half substitute and equalized in the 85th minute at Allianz Arena. It was a moment that followed a Hollywood script with the Bayern legend on the way out.

But Davide Frattesi apparently didn't get the memo, as the Inter midfielder put the Serie A leader back in front in the 88th minute.

Should Bayern be unable to overturn its current deficit, there will be plenty of blame apportioned to the key figures. Manager Vincent Kompany won't be spared despite the fact his game plan on Tuesday night was clear and fairly effective:

With time ticking down in the second half, it looked like Lautaro Martínez's goal in the 38th minute would be enough for Inter. Marcus Thuram laid the ball off for Martínez, who struck it perfectly with the outside of his boot to beat goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

The Argentine forward isn't scoring at his usual rate domestically. After eclipsing 20-plus goals for three straight seasons, he has 11 through 28 Serie A matches in 2024-25.

It has been a different story in the Champions League, where Martínez has now scored seven times in 10 matches. Social media was quick to point out his continental form:

It was a much different story for Harry Kane. The English striker is in the midst of another prolific season with 23 Bundesliga goals and another 10 in the UCL.

But playing for Bayern Munich means shouldering massive expectations, and Kane's miss in the 26th minute is what a lot of supporters remember if the club exits in the quarterfinals.

Inter will host the second leg at San Siro on April 16. Bayern is six points clear in first place in the Bundesliga, so a 34th league title is within reach. Kompany's first season will be judged largely by the Champions League, though, domestic success has become a given.

Losing in the quarterfinals probably won't be enough to warrant sacking him. He can be assured of starting 2025-26 with plenty of pressure, though.
