Mets Reportedly 'Were Uncertain About' Pursuing Vlad Jr. Trade Before Jays Contract
The New York Mets weren't completely committed to pursuing a trade for Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before he signed a massive contract extension, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
"The Mets were interested in talking about a possible trade in the winter, but sources say they were uncertain about whether to pursue him in the upcoming winter," Olney reported.
Guerrero signed a 14-year, $500 million contract without deferrals to stay with the Blue Jays on Monday, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

SNY's Andy Martino reported on Jan. 15 that the Mets were "checking in" with Toronto regarding Guerrero earlier in the offseason. He noted the possibility of a trade agreement being reached was an outcome considered to be "far from the most likely," though.
New York eventually brought back first baseman Pete Alonso on a two-year contract worth $54 million with a player opt-out following the 2025 season.
Alonso potentially entering free agency once again could have ignited a pursuit of Guerrero, but that doesn't seem to be on the table anymore.
Through the first 10 games of the 2025 season, Guerrero hasn't hit a home run and owns a .667 OPS. Still, the four-time All-Star is coming off a 2024 campaign in which he racked up 30 homers and 103 RBI to go along with a .323/.396/.544 slash line.
While the Mets reportedly checked on Guerrero's availability, they were unsure of a future trade before he signed a long-term extension with Toronto.
