Following months of back-and-forth negotiations, the Blue Jays and Guerrero Jr. finally reached an agreement on Sunday. The deal, which includes no deferrals, gives Guerrero Jr. the "second-largest guaranteed contract in major league history," per Rosenthal. With an average annual value of $35.71 million, Guerrero Jr.’s deal ranks as the 11th-highest in MLB history.
The 26-year-old wasn’t set to hit free agency until after the 2025 season but had consistently expressed his desire to stay with the Blue Jays, per Rosenthal, who originally signed him out of the Dominican Republic in 2015 when he was just 16.
Toronto had opportunities to secure the star slugger at a lower guaranteed price earlier in his career but was unable to meet his demands. The stakes rose further when Juan Soto inked a $765 million deal with the Mets in December.
Toronto has opened the season with a 5-5 record, while their first baseman is hitting .285 with 4 RBI.
