Malcolm Brogdon, Knicks Agree to Contract, Updated Roster for 2025-26 NBA Season
Malcolm Brogdon is moving on after one season with the Washington Wizards.
Brogdon and the New York Knicks agreed to a one-year contract on Friday, his agent, Sam Permut, told ESPN's Shams Charania.
Per SNY's Ian Begley, Brogdon's deal is non-guaranteed and he will compete with Landry Shamet for a backup point guard role if the Knicks don't make a trade because they only have one roster spot open.
Knicks Updated Roster
- PG: Jalen Brunson, Miles McBride, Malcolm Brogdon, Tyler Kolek
- SG: Mikal Bridges, Jordan Clarkson, Landry Shamet
- SF: Josh Hart, Guerschon Yabusele, Kevin McCullar Jr.
- PF: OG Anunoby, Pacôme Dadiet
- C: Karl-Anthony Towns, Mitchell Robinson, Ariel Hukporti
Brogdon was limited to just 24 games and 13 starts last season by multiple injuries, including a torn thumb ligament in October and a left ankle sprain that sidelined him for the final 28 games of the season.
When available, Brogdon averaged 12.7 points on 43.3 percent shooting from the field, including a career-low 28.6 percent from deep.
He set another career low by averaging 23.5 minutes on the court while putting up 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.
That marked the second straight season during which Brogdon has missed significant time due to injury. He was limited to just 39 games during his 2023-24 campaign with the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Wizards decided to hold onto Brogdon's expiring contract at the deadline because they believed he, Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart would serve as "good mentors for their young guards and wings," The Athletic's David Aldridge reported in February.
New players like No. 6 draft pick Tre Johnson will have to turn to newly-acquired veteran CJ McCollum next season instead of Brogdon now that he and the franchise have parted ways.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on Aug. 29 that the Knicks, alongside the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, had Brogdon on their radar.
By beating out those opponents to sign Brogdon, the Knicks will hope to have acquired enough guard depth to build on last spring's trip to the Eastern Conference Final and contend for a title next spring.
The Knicks will hope Brogdon can continue contributing efficient scoring, while hopefully remaining healthy in a sheltered position behind Jalen Brunson in the depth chart.
Brogdon, who turned 32 in December, earned a Rookie of the Year award with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2017 and the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Boston Celtics in 2023. The Suns mark the sixth team he has played for across 10 NBA seasons.
